Boat Display Stands

by Peter Graffunder

When the paddlesport show came along this year I needed some presentable boat stands for my two kayaks. Searching my garage I found a sheet of 5.2mm Luan plywood.

The cutting pattern I sent in produces two sets of stands (four stands). Each stand consists of two side pieces with slots cut into them and one spreader piece.

Since the show I have been using the stands to work on, however, they were intended as show stands and have some disadvantages as working stands.

The 5.2mm plywood is very flexible. This could be improved by using thicker plywood, but the stands would also be heavier.

The flexibility could also be limited by changing the location of the upper tab on the spreader piece (lower it 1/2"), so that the shoulder above it cannot slip.

Betty Ketter commented that the base of the stands is too wide and you will trip on them. She is right. This could be corrected by decreasing the angle of the sides.

All in all the stands are a prototype which could be improved upon, but they are light weight and easy to transport when disassembled.
