Boat Display Stands - 2
by Philip Jacobs
I enjoyed Peter Graffunder's plans for quick, light display stands in the June HUT! I noticed a wide variety of styles at the recent paddlesports show, and was impressed by many of the creative designs, many built out of 'material on hand'. It was almost as interesting to check out the stands as the boats!
I was also faced with the need for a quick, display stand for a second boat. I have one, fairly traditional building stand, but really didn't want to make another. I also have several sets of sawhorses, which I was convinced could be pressed into service with a minimum of work.
I ended up using a few scraps of 1 by 2 inch hardwood on each saw horse, attached to the top rail with a bolt and nut. A short piece of rope run through a hole drilled in each piece holds the sticks in a 'V' shape, and a piece of foam pipe insulation pads the hull. When not in use, the sticks pivot flat against the side for use as regular sawhorses.
This stand is not as light as Peter's, but uses the same sawhorses (and storage space) I had; I may try to make a set based on his design for next year. It would be fun to profile other, building and display stand designs in future issues of Hut!
