DNR Recreational Map Series Now Complete (res10)

The final six map areas of the Public Recreation Information Map (PRIM) series have now been completed, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. PRIM began with a 1989 appropriation through the Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCMR), with direction to create the most comprehensive map available for outdoor recreation. PRIM is a full-color map, which divides the state into 51 map areas. The final six areas- Ada, Albert Lea, Crookston, Fairmont, Wheaton and Worthington - are now complete.

By bringing together federal, state, and county lands into one map, PRIM can make it easier to find a favorite recreation area. Each map covers approximately 2,000 square miles and displays public campgrounds; public swimming areas; state trails: state forest roads; designated trout streams; canoe and boating routes; water access sites: fishing piers; different types of public administered lands (color coded): township, section and range lines; topography; and much more. A comprehensive, full-color chart featured on the back of each area map summarizes recreational facilities of the area. Proceeds from PRIM sales go back into the program to keep the maps current.

For help in determining which PRIM maps will best suit your needs, phone the DNR Information Center at 612/296-6157 in the Twin Cities metro area, or call toll free in Minnesota 1-800-766-6000.

PRIM maps, which sell for $4.95, are available at sporting goods shops, quick-stop station-stores, and a number of DNR area and regional offices throughout the state. Complete sets are available from the Minnesota Book Store at 117 University Ave. in St. Paul and the DNR Gift Shop at 500 Lafayette Road in St. Paul. Minnesota has thousands of miles of forests, lakes, and navigable rivers, and an abundance of wildlife, fish, minerals, and natural beauty. The state offers many different types of outdoor recreation such as camping, fishing, hunting, biking, horseback riding, canoeing, and much more. Finding a way to the right spot for that favorite activity can be time consuming without the right information. The popular, full color PRIM can help save time and make that job easier.
