National Recreation Reservation Service in Operation (res6)
The public may reserve thousands of recreation sites, including many of their favorite Minnesota National Forest campgrounds, by calling one toll-free number. Campsites may be reserved at 9 campgrounds on the Superior National Forest and at 19 campgrounds on the Chippewa National Forest by calling 1-877-444-6777.
In a joint program of the Forest Service and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the National Recreation Reservation System (NRRS) will provide a "one-stop" reservation service. In addition to the toll-free number, which became operational earlier this month, NRRS offers Internet service starting November 16th and in-person reservation services starting in December at selected field sites. The Internet site address is: http://reserveusa.com. Customers will be offered alternate facilities if their first choice of site is booked.
Campground visitors reserving Forest Service sites will pay the usual campsite fees, as well as an $8.65 service charge per reservation. The service charge will be the same whether the reservation is made by phone, the Internet, or in person. Reservations for individual Forest Service facilities will be available 240 days in advance, while group facilities will be available up to 360 days ahead
The reservation system will be operated under contract by Park.Net, Inc., of Ballston Spa, NY. Other federal land agencies will be able to join NRRS later. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, a part of the Superior National Forest, will be offering reservations through Park.Net in 1999.
