BWCAW Trips
May 1998
Would you like to help the US Forest Service(USFS) on a trail and portage clearing trip? You can join us May 2 and 3 ($50), May 6 through 10 ($75), or May 15 through 17 ($55) for a cooperative adventure with the MCA and Minnesota Wilderness Trails Alliance (MWTA) in the Sioux Hustler Trail area.
Let me tell you why some friends and I enjoy doing the trail clearing trips:
It is a great chance to meet new friends and get reacquainted with friends from the past. My good friend John introduced me to the Sioux Hustler area almost two decades ago. Over the years our busy lives have kept us from tripping together, but a few years ago John called me with a proposal. We talked about old times on the Sioux Hustler Trail and that it was now abandoned. He then asked if Iíd help him and the MWTA get the area cleared for use, including the use of a canoe route to access the trail. Since that call weíve renewed our friendship and had some great new adventures on the Sioux Hustler Trail.
I met Carol on a Sioux Hustler Trail evaluation trip with John. She was the USFS volunteer liaison and had come along to do a trail assessment. We had a great trip--great weather, good food, stimulating conversation and moose sightings. Carol also learned the finer points of efficient paddling with three people in a canoe loaded with gear. Although she was somewhat skeptical about the proposal to have volunteers work on trail and portage clearing, it has proven to be very successful. In fact, it has been named as one of the American Hiking Societyís Trails of Tomorrow. Now, every time I see Carol at the canoe put-in she tells me how much fun she had and how good the food was.
So, come and join us and get reacquainted with some old friends or meet some new ones--and pick up a compliment of your own to feel good about.
